Choose carefully

Before you begin the transformation of ordinary wall to feature wall, take a good look around the room. As the wall will be the main attraction, you want to choose one without windows or doors so that there are no distractions and the eye is drawn to a focal point. If there’s a traditional looking fireplace in your chosen wall, even better!

Opposites attract

Go for three wallpapered walls and a painted one, or vice versa. If you’re going for a bolder looking room, go for the darker colours such as deep reds or browns. If you want a more relaxing environment, go for a different intensity or similar colour to the surrounding walls. Neutral colours always complement a room well.

Think outside the box

You don’t need to use only paint and wallpaper to create an outstanding feature wall. You can try anything, from wood to a single mirror that spans the entire wall! It’s all about finding a look that fits in with your home.

Don’t go overboard

Some people love the idea of a feature wall so much they decide to do it in every room: don’t! This is the number one mistake you can make when designing an interior. Too much of one thing, no matter how good, results in overload. It’s better to sparingly use the idea of a feature wall than to overdo it and cause it to look tacky.

Keep it simple

Don’t think that you need to pile accessories onto your wall. If done right, the accented wall will speak for itself. However, if you do want to spice it up and not keep it looking plain (such as if it’s a painted a single colour rather than patterned wallpaper), choose one group of accessories rather than several. For example, choose to have different clocks of varying sizes, shapes, and colours instead of a mixture of frames, canvases, clocks, mirrors, and quotes.
